Fall always makes me think about warm desserts, family gatherings, Sunday dinners and the kind of treats that just feel like home.
And since Dot’s Petite Bakery Co. is all about desserts connected to memories, celebrations, family and comfort, I knew I wanted whatever I offered this fall to have that same feeling.
At first, I thought I needed an entire fall menu.
Peach cobbler. Sweet potato. Maybe something apple. Maybe a specialty cake flavor.
Basically…all the fall things. 😂
But the more I work on building my menu, the more I’m realizing that I don’t need to offer everything.
I’d rather have one really good seasonal treat that people look forward to coming back every year.
So lately, I’ve been testing two ideas that feel especially fitting for Dot’s:
Peach cobbler and sweet potato.
And I think I may already have a favorite. 👀
Building a Fall Menu That Still Feels Like Dot’s
One of the biggest things I’m learning while building Dot’s Petite Bakery Co. is that everything doesn’t have to go on my menu.
Something can taste good and still not make sense for my bakery.
Since I’m building Dot’s while also working full-time, I have to think about more than flavor.
How long does it take me to make?
How many ingredients do I need?
Can I prep anything ahead of time?
How easy is it to package?
And most importantly:
Does it actually feel like Dot’s?
I want my bakery to be known for desserts that remind you of something.
Maybe it’s Sunday dinner at your grandmother’s house.
Maybe it’s the cake you always asked for on your birthday.
Maybe it’s a dessert that only showed up around the holidays.
That’s the feeling I’m trying to build into this bakery.
So instead of asking myself:
“How many fall desserts can I sell?”
I’m starting to ask:
“Which fall dessert deserves to become part of a Dot’s memory?”

Testing Mini Peach Cobblers 🍑
Peach cobbler immediately felt right.
It’s warm.
It’s familiar.
And it feels like something that belongs at a family gathering.
It’s one of those desserts that already has a memory attached to it before you even take the first bite.
That’s exactly the kind of dessert I want associated with Dot’s.
Instead of making one large cobbler, I decided to test mine in 10-ounce mini tins.
I really like the idea of taking a familiar family-style dessert and turning it into something that fits the “Petite” side of Dot’s.
They’re still a good size, but having individual cobblers makes them easier to package, share and possibly sell as a small collection.
Right now, I’m thinking that if peach cobbler officially makes the fall menu, I wouldn’t sell them individually.
I’m leaning toward something like a 4-pack of mini peach cobblers.

Why Peach Cobbler Is Winning Me Over
One thing I’m realizing during menu testing is that a dessert has to do more than taste good.
It has to work for the business too.
And peach cobbler checks a lot of boxes.
The ingredients aren’t overly complicated.
I can prepare parts of it ahead of time.
It doesn’t require hours of decorating.
The mini tins fit my brand.
And most importantly, it still gives me that homemade, nostalgic feeling I’m looking for.
There’s also something I really love about a dessert that doesn’t have to be perfectly decorated to be good.
Sometimes you don’t need piping.
You don’t need sprinkles.
You don’t need an elaborate design.
Sometimes you just need warm peaches, cinnamon, a buttery topping and maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
That’s fall to me. 🍂
Then There Was Sweet Potato… 🍠
Sweet potato was another flavor I really wanted to explore for fall.
Pumpkin gets so much attention this time of year, but I kept thinking:
Why does everything have to be pumpkin? 😂
Sweet potato feels closer to the type of nostalgia I’m trying to create with Dot’s.
It reminds me of holiday dinners, family gatherings and those desserts that seem to show up year after year.
I don’t necessarily know if sweet potato needs to become a permanent menu flavor.
But I definitely think there’s something there.
Maybe it eventually becomes a mini cake.
Maybe it becomes its own dessert.
Or maybe it’s one of those treats that shows up for a week or two and then disappears until next year.
Which brings me to another idea I’ve been thinking about…
Could This Be the Beginning of Dot’s Petite Treats?
Okay…hear me out.
Petite Treats.
I wasn’t even trying to create another part of my brand when I first thought about the name, but the more I say it, the more it makes sense.
Instead of every dessert I create becoming a permanent menu item, Petite Treats could be my limited releases.
Something might be available for a weekend.
Maybe two weeks.
Maybe an entire season.
Then it’s gone.
That would give me room to experiment with nostalgic desserts without creating a huge permanent menu.
Peach cobbler could be a Petite Treat.
A future sweet potato dessert could be one.
And there are already other flavors and ideas I want to experiment with eventually.
I think that could be part of what makes Dot’s fun.
You never know which memory is coming back next. 🤍
Do I Really Need More Than One Fall Treat?
This has probably been the biggest question I’ve asked myself.
At first, I thought a seasonal bakery menu needed several different choices.
Now?
I’m starting to think the opposite.
I’d rather offer one really good seasonal dessert instead of five average ones.
Especially at this stage of my business.
A smaller seasonal menu means I can focus on consistency, control my ingredient costs and make sure every order is something I’m proud to hand to a customer.
And right now…
Peach cobbler is making a VERY strong case. 😂🍑
If it officially makes the menu, I’m leaning toward offering the mini cobblers as a 4-pack for a limited fall run.
Simple.
Cozy.
Nostalgic.
Very Dot’s.

What I’m Learning From Testing My Bakery Menu
Building this menu is teaching me so much more than recipes.
I’m learning how long things actually take me to make.
I’m learning what I can realistically produce.
I’m learning what ingredients I need to keep around.
I’m learning what packages well.
I’m learning what I actually enjoy making.
And I’m learning that I don’t have to rush.
Dot’s doesn’t need twenty desserts right now.
It needs a few really good ones.
And I want each one to have a reason for being there.
So that’s what I’m doing.
Testing.
Learning.
Tweaking.
And building this little bakery one dessert at a time.
So…Peach Cobbler or Sweet Potato?
If I had to choose today?
Peach cobbler is definitely in the lead. 🍑
But I’m still testing.
And I actually want your opinion.
If Dot’s could only have ONE fall treat, what would you choose?
🍑 Mini Peach Cobbler
or
🍠 Sweet Potato Treat
Leave a comment and tell me.
Because one of them just might be making its way onto the Dot’s fall menu very soon. 🤍
