How I Made a Baby Dedication Sheet Cake for My Niece

There’s something different about baking for family.

I’ve made quite a few cakes and treats while building Dot’s Petite Bakery Co., but some of them mean a little more than others.

My niece’s baby dedication cake was one of those.

For her special day, I made a 13×9 sheet cake—something simple, pretty, and made for our family to enjoy together.

And the more I bake, the more I realize that these are the desserts I love making most.

The ones attached to a memory.

Why I Chose a Sheet Cake for Her Dedication

When we think about celebration cakes, it’s easy to immediately picture a tall, three-layer cake covered in decorations.

But every celebration doesn’t need one.

For my niece’s baby dedication, a sheet cake just made sense. Serving was easy, and we had enough cake to share. It still left room to make something special for her day.

It also reminded me of something I want to keep in mind as I build the Dot’s Petite Bakery Co. menu:

The dessert should fit the celebration—not the other way around.

Sometimes you need the three-layer centerpiece cake.

And sometimes a beautiful sheet cake is exactly right.

Making the Cake Around Real Life

One thing I want to keep sharing on this blog is what building a bakery actually looks like for me.

I work full-time while building Dot’s Petite Bakery Co., so I don’t always have an entire day available to bake and decorate.

That means planning ahead has become a BIG part of my process.

For this cake, I baked ahead of time and froze the cake until I was ready for the next step.

Freezing cakes has become one of those little things that makes baking around my schedule so much easier.

Once the cake is completely cooled, properly wrapped, and stored, I don’t have to squeeze baking, cooling, decorating, cleaning, and everything else into one night.

And I definitely appreciate anything that makes cake week a little less stressful.

Decorating My Niece’s Dedication Cake

Then came the part that still makes me a little nervous sometimes: decorating.

If you’ve been following my baking journey, you already know that my piping skills are still a work in progress.

I’m getting better, but I’m definitely not at the point where every piping bag magically does exactly what I want it to do. 😂

And I’m okay with showing that.

This blog isn’t supposed to be a collection of perfect cakes made by someone who already knows everything.

It’s part of the journey of me learning.

I’m figuring out which piping tips I like.

I’m learning how much buttercream I actually need.

I’m getting better at planning designs before I start.

And every cake gives me another chance to practice.

The Baking Tools I Used for This Sheet Cake

One thing I’ve learned since I started baking more consistently is that you don’t need every cake gadget you see online.

But having a few good basics definitely makes the process easier.

For this sheet cake, some of the tools and supplies I reached for included things like my cake pan, piping bags and decorating tips, offset spatula, mixing tools, cake board, and the supplies I use to prep and store my cakes.

I’ve put my sheet cake essentials together in one place for anyone who wants to make a celebration cake of their own.

It Was More Than Just Another Cake

Once everything was finished, it wasn’t really the decorating that made this cake special.

It was who I made it for.

Years from now, we’ll have pictures from my niece’s dedication.

Our family will remember gathering together.

She’ll be able to look back at photos from a day she was too little to remember herself.

And somewhere in those memories will be the cake her aunt made for her.

That’s the part I love.

Because people aren’t really celebrating cake.

They’re celebrating babies.

Birthdays.

Graduations.

New beginnings.

Sunday dinners.

Holidays.

Family traditions.

And all of the little moments in between.

The cake just gets to be part of the memory.

Where Every Bite Brings Back a Memory

When I chose “Where Every Bite Brings Back a Memory” for Dot’s Petite Bakery Co., I originally thought a lot about nostalgia—the desserts, flavors, and moments that remind us of something from our past.

But I’m realizing something else as I continue this journey.

Sometimes we’re not recreating an old memory.

We’re making a new one.

My niece’s dedication cake became one of those memories for me.

It was another family celebration I got to contribute to, another decorating experience that taught me something, and another little piece of the story I’m building with Dot’s Petite Bakery Co.

That’s what I want this blog to continue being about.

Not just pretty desserts.

The stories behind them.

The things I’m learning.

The recipes I’m testing.

The mistakes.

The progress.

And all the memories we’re creating along the way.
