Some of the sweetest opportunities in life show up quietly — like a simple message that says, “Hey, can you make a cake for my baby’s first birthday?”
That’s exactly what happened a few weeks ago. Someone I used to work with saw the black-and-gold Biscoff cake I made for my aunt’s 60th birthday and asked if I’d make a smash cake for her baby boy’s first birthday.
At first, I hesitated. Cakes aren’t my strongest skill (yet!), and most of my practice has been with family. This would be my first cake order outside of family, and I didn’t want to overpromise. So I told her honestly: I like to keep things simple while I’m still learning.
To my surprise, she didn’t hesitate at all — she said she loved my style and wanted something classic, cozy, and simple. We decided on a 6-inch Funfetti white cake, and from that moment, I felt both nervous and excited in the best way.
A Simple, Sweet Start
There’s something about Funfetti that makes any celebration feel special. The colors, the nostalgia — it’s childhood joy baked right into every slice.
To get the perfect size and shape, I used my favorite 6-Inch Cake Pans — small enough for a baby’s first birthday but tall enough for that layered look. I lined the pans with parchment circles to help the cakes release easily (a small trick that saves a lot of stress).
Once the cakes cooled, I filled and frosted them with my go-to vanilla buttercream, keeping the design soft and minimal. For the sprinkles, I used Rainbow Confetti Sprinkles that melt perfectly into the batter without bleeding colors — giving it that true Funfetti texture.
Keeping It Cozy & Simple
I’ve learned that you don’t need fancy tools to create something beautiful — just a few essentials that make the process smoother. These seven items are my go-tos for cakes like this:
- E-far 6-Inch Cake Pan Set of 3
- RICCLE 6-Inch Cake Boards
- Medley Hills Farm Rainbow Sprinkles
- “One” Glitter Cake Topper
- WINKIO 8×8×8 Cake Boxes with Window
- Product Photography Backdrop Set

What This Cake Taught Me
When I dropped the cake off, the look on her face said everything. She smiled and said, “It’s perfect.”
That moment meant so much more than just finishing a cake — it was a reminder that even while I’m still learning, I can create something special that makes people happy.
Sometimes growth looks like saying “yes” before you feel completely ready — and trusting that your heart (and your oven) will rise to the occasion.
